5 Warning Signs Your Brake Rotors Have Thermal Runout

Contrary to popular belief, brake rotors rarely physically bend like a taco. What drivers perceive as warped rotors is almost always Disc Thickness Variation (DTV) caused by uneven brake pad friction material transfer under severe heat cycles.
When hot brake pads remain clamped against stationary rotors after hard stops, cementite friction deposits form on the disc face. Precision dual-spindle on-car lathe resurfacing restores perfectly parallel surfaces with zero runout down to 0.005mm.

Step 1: Measure lateral disc runout with a calibrated magnetic dial indicator.

Step 2: Inspect caliper guide pins and rubber boots for thermal binding and grease degradation.
