A boost leak as small as a pinhole can cause the turbocharger to over-spin by 40,000 RPM in an attempt to meet ECM target manifold pressure, leading to premature thrust bearing failure.
Modern turbos use electronic stepper motors to control wastegate flapper tension. If baseline closed-position voltage drifts outside the 3.4V – 3.8V window, the ECM enters boost-protection limp mode.
